{"id":1122,"date":"2024-01-10T03:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T03:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2024-01-11T16:45:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T16:45:24","slug":"deep-dive-on-phius-for-professionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/deep-dive-on-phius-for-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep Dive on Phius (for Professionals)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hi, Dale here.&nbsp; It\u2019s been a couple of months; welcome back again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post is aimed at those of you who are architects, builders, and skilled tradespersons.&nbsp; We\u2019ll take a deep dive into Phius certifications (Passive House Institute US) with a focus on single family homes.&nbsp; (Phius standards can be applied to multifamily and commercial buildings too; I may post more on them in the future.)  This post is a bit longer, with lots of links to materials I found over the last few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First a quick refresher:<\/strong> Passive House is the gold standard for building energy efficiency.&nbsp; Phius has created building envelope standards (insulation, airtightness, and vapor control) that are cost-optimized for all climate zones in North America (and beyond).&nbsp; The result is a building that requires 75-90% less energy to heat and cool than most buildings and produces savings that pay back the additional envelope cost over time.&nbsp; If you have not seen this introductory video before, it is well worth 4 minutes of your time: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xlrgE7PEtv0\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Passive House 101 Explained in Under 4 Minutes<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>This TEDx talk spells out the benefits of Passive House which you can promote to your clients.&nbsp; The UK-based speaker sums it up as <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rktvTXnX2vE\">Virtuous Luxury<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp; While I prefer to refer to our homes as \u201chigh performance, superbly durable, and extraordinarily healthy,\u201d the talk is a great model for how to promote the value of Passive House to the building owner and the public. &nbsp;(MiNet0 designs aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/our-values-lagom\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lagom<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, not luxury, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/our-values-quality\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">quality<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/our-values-innovation\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">innovation<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/minetzero.com\/our-values-sustainability\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sustainability<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For professionals designing and building single family homes, Phius offers several rigorous certifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>For architects and building engineers, it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/certifications\/professionals\/phius-certified-consultant-cphc\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CPHC<\/span><\/strong><\/a> certification (Certified Passive House Consultant):\n<ul>\n<li>I obtained my CPHC certification in a class of 15 architects and 3 engineers who had HVAC\/mechanical systems background like myself.&nbsp; I was on a team with two architects which was super helpful because they could quickly render a building in 3D CAD.&nbsp; My strength was the number crunching on HVAC\/DHW energy use and assembly R-values needed for our in-class project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In total, obtaining the certification will require $2100 and\n<ul>\n<li>a few weeks to watch the independent online training totaling 50-60 hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>24 hours of live training over two weeks (including a team project).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>time to study for and take a challenging, calculation-heavy online exam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more time to submit a complete drawing package meeting Phius requirements for an assigned hypothetical project.&nbsp; This was challenging for me with my fledgling 3D CAD skills.&nbsp; Phius does accept hand sketches for some of the details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can apply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/phius-certified-consultant-cphc-program-overview\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For builders, it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/certifications\/professionals\/phius-certified-builder-cphb\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CPHB<\/span><\/strong><\/a> certification (Certified Passive House Builder):\n<ul>\n<li>I know of only one CPHB in West Michigan.&nbsp; We need more!&nbsp; In fact, I want to either partner with a builder who obtains this certification, and\/or hire someone who obtains this certification to be the lead carpenter on my sites.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can apply here for upcoming virtual training starting January 16 (for two weeks) and again on March 20: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/browse-all-events\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Browse All Events | Phius<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a house to be Phius certified, an independent 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/certifications\/professionals\/phius-certified-rater\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rater<\/span><\/strong><\/a> must be involved in the project\u2019s design, construction, and final inspection phases.\n<ul>\n<li>Residential raters can apply for two-day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/browse-all-events\/phius-certified-rater-training-boston-ma-march-2024\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in-person training<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in Boston starting March 21.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commercial verifiers can apply for two-day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/browse-all-events\/phius-certified-verifier-training-boston-ma-january-2024\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in-person training<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in Boston starting January 25.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These services would be excellent additions to businesses that already do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hersindex.com\/hers-index\/what-is-the-hers-index\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HERs<\/span><\/strong><\/a> ratings, LEED or Greenstar certification, and\/or other building performance testing.&nbsp; Again, we need at least one in West Michigan!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also need skilled trades gearing up to support this work:\n<ul>\n<li>Carpenters will need to learn some new <a href=\"https:\/\/passivehouseaccelerator.com\/videos\/smart-airtightness-strategies\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">air-sealing skills<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, which is arguably even more important than the finish-carpentry.&nbsp; On a passive house jobsite, nobody penetrates the envelope without an approved plan for reliable air-sealing and a signoff that\u2019s it\u2019s been done correctly!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insulators will need equipment and training to do a high-quality job of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OcNRGeZUHDk\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dense-packing cellulose<\/span><\/strong><\/a> insulation into thick, open wall and roof cavities.&nbsp; (Wet-applied cellulose is NOT allowed in thick assemblies!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HVAC contractors will need training to install and start low-ambient heat pumps and high performance ERVs.&nbsp; Once trained, there\u2019s no reason a low ambient heat pump should require more labor to install than a cooling-only system (although the unit will cost more).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plumbing contractors should be familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/watersense\/watersense-labeled-homes\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EPA WaterSense<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and trained to put in heat pump water heaters.&nbsp; Again, there\u2019s no labor addition here vs an old-fashioned electric water heater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical\/solar contractors are needed who can design and install an integrated system with a smart electrical panel, a solar array, a battery storage system, a bi-directional EV charger, the heat pumps including a condensing dryer, and the induction stove.&nbsp; There is some additional design and installation work for the power and storage systems, but everything else is normal.&nbsp; Look at it as an addition to your scope of work.&nbsp; There\u2019s no better time to add the \u201cpower plant\u201d to the house than right up front!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All finishes are sourced for low embodied carbon and health, but otherwise they install normally.&nbsp; (OK, maybe some new zero-VOC adhesives, paints, etc., but an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/products?s=mega\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Energy Star<\/span><\/strong><\/a> appliance plugs in just like any other appliance.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Everyone will need some training\/orientation to the special requirements of the building and site, all of which will be documented in the plans, so pay even more attention to the details than usual!<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the house itself, Phius offers two paths to certification:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/phius-core-prescriptive-what-you-need-know\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">prescriptive path<\/span><\/strong><\/a> is less costly (~$700 plus CPHC fees of say $10,000 and rater fees of $5-10,000) but will constrain the footprint of the building to a \u201ccompactness ratio\u201d of envelope to floor area.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/phius-2021-performance-criteria-calculator\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">performance path<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (~$1700 plus CPHC fees of say $15-20,000 and rater fees of $8-15,000) allows more design flexibility but requires a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/wufi-passive-training\">WUFI<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>energy performance model.\n<ul>\n<li>Notes\n<ul>\n<li>When I first started thinking about building net zero houses back in 2020, I was hesitant to seek certification because of the additional costs and time required. However, I\u2019ve come to see the support and roadmap offered by Phius as indispensable. It\u2019s not easy to change course and build better within a construction community that has so much status quo inertia. Phius (and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/greenhomeinstitute.org\/services\/\">Greenstar<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/leed\/rating-systems\/residential\"><strong>LEED<\/strong><\/a><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildersforclimateaction.org\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BEAM<\/span><\/strong><\/a>) have helped me clarify both the vision and the details needed to produce a comprehensively net zero design that is build-able with obtainable materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New houses can be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/certifications\/projects\/project-certification-overview\">certified<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>either to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/standards\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Phius Core<\/span><\/strong><\/a> or, with the addition of onsite renewable energy, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/phius-zero\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Phius Zero<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing homes can be certified under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phius.org\/standards\/retrofit\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Phius Revive<\/span><\/strong><\/a> program.
