Hi, Dale here. Welcome to Mi Net Zero! I’m glad you found us! In this blog, we explore the why, what, and how of net zero living.
In this post, I want to share the mission statement of the company. We want to be transparent about what Michigan Net Zero homes is aiming to do and share a little about how we intend to operate.
The Business Mission Statement has two parts:
“Provide homeowners with high quality, healthy, super comfortable, net zero homes. Design the solar system to provide the energy needed on an annual basis to power the home and two EVs.” (We like to say “Your home is your key to net zero living!”)
“In partnership with other leaders in West Michigan, transform the new construction industry’s practices and products to be net zero by 2030, and the local economy to be net zero by 2050 or sooner.”
The Mission Statement for Employees and Partners reads:
“We learn, innovate, and collaborate to build exemplary net zero homes. We help transform the construction industry in West Michigan and move the local economy to net zero by 2050 or sooner.”
To elaborate:
Michigan Net Zero Homes LLC aims to promote a rapid transition to net zero buildings in Kent County and beyond. We will partner with many others to achieve this transition. We want to be a catalyst for change.
The passive house principles we use can apply to homes and commercial/industrial properties. We will design and build robust net zero homes with enough on-site solar to power the house and two EVs on an annual basis. This will enable the homeowner to eliminate almost 2/3 of their carbon footprint. We also plan to build with materials that sequester carbon so that the house itself has net zero embodied carbon (up-front carbon).
We aim to show the community (and maybe the whole state and beyond – dreaming a bit), compelling examples of how great net zero homes can be. Success for us looks like completion of at least one best-in-class house for sale per year AND seeing many other contractors building net zero too, a HUGE IMPROVEMENT over current building practices.
The transformation we envision is significant and parallels the transformation happening in the automotive industry. (And by the way, there are important synergies between your home and your EV using V2H or V2G technology…more about that in a future post.) Planning for a net zero home, either by buying new or by retrofitting existing, is a way for you to take control of your carbon footprint as well as your energy systems.
In summary:
We have committed to building the highest performing homes in West Michigan. And we aim to partner with many others to transform the local construction industry. We believe our moment in time calls for these big goals. With the partnership of many other visionary leaders and practitioners, we are optimistic we can achieve them

I will aim to post by noon on Fridays. Next week we’ll begin a four-part series on the values behind our design philosophy, beginning with Quality.
